SECURITY experts at Kaspersky have warned about the dangers of chatbots on Facebook Messenger.
Not all chatbots pose a danger but some are said to come with various risks.
Kaspersky made the claims in a blog post about keeping children safe online.
It states: “It is estimated that on Facebook Messenger alone, there are over 300,000 chatbots in operation.
“However, not all of them are safe, and may carry various risks.”
One risk mentioned by the expert is the potential for chatbots to reveal age-inappropriate content to users.
Kaspersky notes that there are bots designed to provide erotic experience.
Chatbots can also be dangerous for adults to correspond with.
Cybercriminals have been known to use AI chatbots to lure victims into scams.
This is a tactic employed in romance scams.
AI can be used to strike up engaging and convincing conversations with users.
While the bot is working to form a connection with the human, the cybercriminal behind it is working out ways to steal personal information and even money.
When corresponding with a chatbot, it’s always best to avoid giving away personal information.
If a stranger or a bot asks for banking information, this is a big warning sign that you should end the conversation.
Even ChatGPT users are warned to avoid giving the bot private details, which it may end up sharing.
Kaspersky notes: “It is extremely important to discuss with children the importance of privacy and the dangers of oversharing, as well as talking to them about their online experiences regularly.”
