Families going to the seaside pay £30 for parking as charges soar

In Southend-on-Sea, a number of council-run car parks along the beachfront charge £19.30 for the day, such as Fairheads Green and Seaway.

The analysis looked at both public and private car parks across ten seaside towns, looking at the most expensive parking prices for an eight-hour stay – from 9am until 5pm – on August 27, 2022, and compared these with today’s prices set to be charged on August 28, 2023.

Future prices were based on hourly rates tracked by both YourParkingSpace and Parkopedia, another car park booking portal.

The portal said most car parks upped their prices to a full day’s worth of parking after six hours.

Across all ten towns, prime parking spots have increased by an average of 67pc since 2022, it said.

Some seaside destinations have already experienced major price jumps for prime parking spots.

In Brighton, the most expensive parking space has only risen by £1.95 – already costing drivers £33 last year.

On-street parking charges in Brighton and Hove were meant to rise last month, with some areas expecting hourly rates to jump from £1.40 to £5.60.

But the council is now rethinking the charges, following complaints made by workers in the area who say they cannot afford the price rises.
