A police cadet was shot to death by her husband who then turned the gun on himself, leaving their eight-year-old son an orphan days before Thanksgiving.
Taylor Hagan, 32, was fatally shot by Briton Hagan, 41, at the Olympus Encantada apartment building in Albuquerque, New Mexico, around 4pm on Tuesday, according to police.
A neighbor called 911 after hearing a shooting and the couple were pronounced dead by cops at the scene, KRQE reported.
She was still in the Albuquerque Police Department Academy.
‘Taylor was working hard to meet the challenges of becoming an APD officer,’ police Chief Medina stated on Wednesday.
‘She chose to serve the community as a police officer and keep the community safe.’
Taylor’s body was escorted by the police department’s honor guard to the medical investigator’s office.
Mayor Tim Keller said the city was ‘deeply saddened’ by Taylor’s death and was keeping her loved ones and fellow cadets in their prayers.
‘Domestic violence affects people from all walks of life and incidents can unfortunately increase during the holidays,’ stated Keller. ‘So I urge everyone in our community to be on the look-out for warning signs of abuse.’
The director of the Domestic Violence Resource Center, Maria Cahuenas, told KOAT that domestic violence can quickly become lethal.
‘In one second, it can become an argument to a murder right away. People are isolated with their offenders. They are going to have to spend more time with them,’ she said.
‘People gathering together, some frustrations coming, some arguments escalating.’
The murder-suicide happened a week after a British taxi company owner shot his wife in their daughter’s home in California and then turned the gun on himself. And in August, a cancer doctor in New York shot her baby and then herself inside their home in Somers, a small town roughly 50 miles northeast of New York City.
