The service and app combine together to allow those who really are the most passionate about the sport, to go insanely deep on all the facts, figures and content from the sport as a whole, but also allows great options to monitor the latest for your favourite teams and players.
Features
It’s hard to miss that the NBA App is ‘powered by Microsoft’ which is code for, the video and data served to the platform is done so from Microsoft Azure.
As a fan, the experience to setup is really quick and easy, just tell the app what you like and the experience becomes tailored to you. As with all good services, there’s a ‘For You’ tab which offers a feed of the latest information including the results of the latest games, access to ‘moments’ or highlight reels, along with Top stories from the week, trending content and more.
Right now, there’s even a dedicated ‘Chirstmas Day’ section.
Next, you’ll have access to the raw game data, always up to date with the very latest information. For those who love stats, this is brilliant, delivering you all the stats you could only ever dream of. Of course, there are the scores per quarter in the summary, but dive into Box Score and you’ll find player-by-player data on the minutes played, points scored, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, field goal %, 3 point %, free throw % and so much more.
Once you get done with the data, there’s a Highlights tab where you can watch loads of official videos from the NBA from the match. These videos, as with all other video in the app, supports Chromecast, allowing you to send the video to a smart display in your home.
One of the best features of the subscription is the wide variety of devices you can consume NBA content on.. of course you can stream directly on your mobile on iOS or Android, but also on Android TV, Apple TV, Xbox One and Xbox Series X (select countries), Roku (select countries), Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick, Hisense, Comcast, and Playstation 4 and 5 (select countries).
Mobile access is great, but for the longer sessions and to take advantage of the larger display in your home. Having the ability to watch wherever you are is a nice feature and one we expect from all modern streaming platforms.
Performance
With all streaming services, one of the key questions centres around video quality.
Many of us spend far too much on our mobile phones which feature amazing screens, so it’s important that streaming on mobile networks works great and that the content looks great when you’re on the go.
I can certainly watch streaming content on the desktop, or at least have it play off to the side in a window or tab while I work. This works great and is probably my primary way to leverage the League Pass, while others will live on their phones during more or even commutes to and from work.
If you’re someone who likes to entertain, you’ll want to consume the NBA content on that large 4K TV on your wall. As much as I like the service, unfortunately, the streaming quality is only offered in a maximum of 1080p, so sadly there’s no 4K option.
NBA would serve billions of steams per year to fan, so while I understand the technical challenge, I think in 2023, 4K shouldn’t be an option, especially not with sport, that can be one of the biggest drivers to upgrade your TV. Many modern TVs will attempt to upscale the content, but as good as that tech is, it’s never the same as having high-quality source material.
If I watch NBA games live on Foxtel’s iQ5 set-top box, or via Kayo Sports, there are games that are offered in 4K, so I expect the official NBA service to at least match that quality, particularly important if you’re going to be streaming on a 75″ display with your friends gathered around for the big game.
Quality aside, I never had buffering issues with the service, with streams starting a couple of seconds after tapping into the content.
Price & Availability
NBA League Pass Premium is priced at A$149.99 per season, while the League Pass is offered for A$99.99 per season.
The standard League pass offers the ability to stream live games or watch on-demand, plus around-the-clock NBA TV coverage.
The Premium option offers more, with the ability to watch games commercial-free on 3 devices at a time and get access to in-arena streams.
Overall
In conclusion, NBA League Pass and the NBA app offer a comprehensive and engaging experience for hardcore basketball fans, providing access to live games, on-demand content, and a wealth of additional features.
If you’re someone who likes the sport and occasionally watches a game, so you can hold a conversation in the team room at work, then this may be a hard subscription to justify. For those who live and breathe the sport, who buy the merch from their favourite player and team, and have the posters on the wall, then it’s an absolute no-brainer, you’ll be glad you invested.
The great thing about subscription services like this, and something I’d suggest, is that you try it for a month or two, and see if it fits with your lifestyle and budget, before committing to the annual fee. There is a 7-day trial for free before payment starts, but I doubt that’s long enough to really know if this is for you.
If you want to skip on commercials, watch content when you want to watch it and have all the very latest stats in the palm of your hand, then this combination of the League Pass and the NBA mobile app is a really great solution and one that will undoubtedly find its way onto the home screens of many basketball fans the world over.
