Londoners buy up classic cars to dodge Sadiq Khan’s Ulez expansion

Vintage cars can range in price, with highly sought-after collection pieces going for hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction and entry-level models starting at just a few thousand.

Fondly remembered cars from the past, famed for their reliability, could offer an alternative than buying a modern Ulez-compliant car, while giving drivers an eye-catching ride to talk about.

Favourites such as the Mercedes-Benz W123 (1976-1986), Porsche 924 (1976-1988) and the Jaguar XJ-S (1975-1996) can all go between £2,500 to £5,000 when bought on the used car market.

Ulez compliant cars at the affordable end of the market typically cost between £2,000 and £5,000 when purchased within 50 miles of central London, according to Auto Trader, placing them roughly on par with many classic cars.

Garry Short, managing director of Classic Chrome in Mortlake, said that while demand was yet to pick up for Ulez-compliant cars at his vintage car dealership, he expected to see more interest in older cars as the 40-year window moved forward.

He said: “A lot of people are not aware… that cars that are 40 years old are road tax and ulez exempt. There are cars of this age now that are relatively reliable and can be used on a regular basis. We have a few Mercedes SLs that fall into that bracket, Porches pre-1983 are the same.”

A spokesman for Sadiq Khan said: “The Mayor and TfL have exempted classic cars from Ulez as they are historic vehicles and are harder to adapt to low emission standards. It would be a shame if people took advantage of this exemption, and ended up driving up the costs to buy these vehicles for genuine classic car hobbyists.”
