WHATSAPP users have been warned that they will need to pay a fee for a perk that’ll no longer be free in 2024.
Last year, millions of Android device owners were told that a change was coming to chat back-ups.
Google – which runs Android – has long allowed people to back-up their conversations on Google Drive without eating into their account’s free data allowance.
But that’s all set to change next year.
At some point in the first half of 2024 back-ups will start to count towards your storage allowance, which is limited to just 15GB for free.
15GB can quickly be consumed by years of emails, as well as photos and videos you’ve uploaded.
So, anyone wanting to keep precious memories and chats safely stored online will need to pay for extra storage for WhatsApp with Google One.
The move brings Android in line with iPhone’s iCloud which is already limited.
How much does Google One cost?
Google One is the name of the subscription plans for Google Drive.
There are three main plans available as a monthly charge or annually at a discount.

How to avoid paying for Google One
You can avoid paying for a Google One subscription if you’re clever with your free 15GB storage space.
The first thing to do is have a good clear out of your chats.
Things like photos take up more space, so it might be time to delete some – especially those memes you don’t look at anymore.
To do this, open WhatsApp and tap Settings.
Go to Storage and Data.
Then select Manage Storage.
Here, WhatsApp will show you a number of ways to reduce storage.
