Google says the 17 features disappearing are ‘underutilised’

Google Assistant is used on millions of Google Nest speaker devices, as well as apps via Android and iPhone.

The company said it was removing several features that are “underutilised” in order to “focus on quality and reliability”.

It all comes as amid reports that Google has laid off around a thousands employees.

Among the features on Google Assistant facing the chop is the ability to set music alarms.

While Google says these features are “underutilised” those who do use them have not taken the news well.

“My kids all use this feature to wake up for school EVERY SINGLE DAY,” one user wrote on Reddit.

Other changes include no longer being able to access or manage your cookbook, as well as checking personal travel itineraries by voice.

“This makes no sense,” another person complained.

“Seems like they are breaking up assistant and voice search. So now have to have access assistant another way.”

A third commented: “I don’t know any other company who seems to actively try to make their products and services steadily worse after launch.”

And a fourth said: “Google just jerks customers around like some crash dummies, and wonders why they lose them.”

Other users only just learned that the popular Animal of the Day feature was gone.

“My kids love this,” one disappointed parent explained.

“How resource intensive was “Animal of the Day”, really?.

“It was a delightful part of my family’s day and many others and there was no explanation as to why it was limited then removed.”

You’ll continue to receive these alerts for 30 days until they completely vanish on February 26.
